I’m a practical girl. In fact, I never bought an expensive prom dress and the dresses I did buy were never even meant to be prom dresses (in other words, I could always re-purpose them for a wedding or dinner). I always thought it was a bit silly to get such a fancy dress for just one night… but that didn’t stop me from trying them on “just to see” what it would look like. I thought the most important (and only expensive) dress I would buy would be my wedding dress.
Yet here I am, years after high school (and years before marriage!) choosing a dress that could play a part in shaping my future. That’s a lot of pressure for one dress. I mean, when you choose a prom dress you probably already have a prom date– no pressure there, and when you choose a wedding dress you’ve already locked down someone who’s willing to spend the rest of their life with you, so not a whole lot of pressure there either! For those types of dresses, it’s all about choosing what you love and not thinking about what anyone else will think of your choice. With my competition gown, it wasn’t only about picking something that I loved and felt amazing in… it was about choosing something that would show me off to the judges and make them remember me. I wasn’t sure if any dress was going to be up for the challenge, but I found “the one” at a gown shop in Orlando called Regalia.
Finding “the one” isn’t always a fairy tale story though. I nearly had an aneurism when I turned the price tag over. You thought prom dresses were expensive? Welcome to the world of pageantry. I had a few days of panic while I tried to think of ways to fundraise, but I was blessed with a beyond amazing, incredibly generous sponsor at the absolute perfect time. They, in addition to every single person who contributed to my indiegogo campaign, truly made competing for Miss Florida USA even possible.
As I write this, I am exactly one week away from checking in to the Miss Florida USA competition and kicking off the beginning of a whirlwind week! Make sure you tune in July 12th to cheer me on and see the dress I chose!
Now, you know I couldn’t spill the secret just yet…but I will tell you that I went in a completely different direction and chose to go colorful… I want to see who can guess the color that I chose! Sound off on your guesses below! 🙂
