Every week I’ve given you a little glimpse into the journey from model to beauty queen, but this week I thought I’d give you a glimpse into the ironic journey from model to baker. Yes, you read that right- baker. As in, I am not afraid to toot my own horn and say I make some of the best gosh darn cheesecake you will ever taste. No basic cheesecake here, I’m all about Caramel Bacon Bourbon, Apple Pie, Key Lime Mousse… you get the picture.

Inspired from a dessert I had at Miami Beach’s YardBird restaurant- Caramel Bacon Bourbon cheesecake!

Believe me, I definitely get the irony here. “A model who bakes cheesecake? They must not be very good then or else you would not look like that.” If I had a dollar for every time I heard that sentence….but to that I will say that I’m pretty sure my customers would notice if they were getting cheesecakes with missing pieces! I have proven the old saying that “you can’t trust a skinny baker” completely wrong- and I’m A-ok with that! I’ve been baking for years, first selling cakes and cupcakes for all occasions: weddings, birthdays, graduations etc. However, two years ago I discovered that my true passion was in creating gourmet cheesecakes and I haven’t gone back since! For me, it’s not just about making money and growing my own small business, but discovering that I have a talent that allows me to reach people’s hearts through their stomachs and bring a bite of happiness to their day. Oh man, I just got so cheesy with that last sentence… no pun intended!

Apple pie cheesecake- because you shouldn’t have to pick between cheesecake & apple pie!

White chocolate, coconut, lemon cheesecake heaven!

My point in bringing this up, is that regardless if you meet me in “model mode” or “pageant mode”, there’s more than meets the eye. The same holds true for so many of the models I’ve worked with or the pageant girls I’ve met. These aren’t just pretty faces; they’re entrepreneurs, scholars and philanthropists. We might all be in the same industry or same competition, but we’re all doing something behind the scenes to bring what we can to the world; be it delicious cheesecake, a non-profit or an invention to make life a little easier. Every girl walking that stage with me in a few weeks isn’t just competing for a pretty crown and to be able to say she is the winner- we’re competing for the job opportunity of a lifetime and the potential to touch countless lives (who knew a post about cheesecake could get so deep?!)

Ps. Yes- those are all photos of cheesecake I’ve made- from scratch! some even Gluten Free! 🙂
