Most people in Miami probably have no clue who Hedy Goldsmith is. Your typical Pepe and Yunislaysis from Kendall have no clue that Hedy Goldsmith even exists, and that is a shame.  For the folks unfamiliar with the Miami culinary scene, Hedy is a hell of a baker. Not just any baker though, Hedy is head pastry chef at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink as well as Harry’s Pizzeria. Hedy is a James Beard Award nominee, has garnished national praise for her inventive desserts and was voted by Miami New Times as Best Chef of 2012. So why am I telling you all about her? Well she has a pastry cook book coming out and you should know about it.

I’ve been a fan of Hedy’s creations since my first brunch at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink. I still remember my first Hedy creation; they were coconut and vanilla cream stuffed doughnuts.  I’ve never seen them again on the menu and yet they still make cameo appearances in my dreams. The desserts at Harry’s Pizzeria, which include zeppole’s and the best freaking chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, are just teasers to what Hedy can really do. Michael’s Genuine is where her skills really shine, from daily pie in jar creations, Hedy’s candies, Hedy’s childhood treats, sweet brunch options to homemade ice creams. My favorites from recent memory include her homemade smore’s (everything including the chocolate and marshmallows were made from scratch), peaches & cream doughnut and chocolate, caramel and peanut bar. If you’re lucky you may even catch a craft soda created by Hedy.

Hedy Goldsmith’s book is aptly titled Baking Out Loud and it’s due out on October 2, 2012. If you hop over to Amazon.com you can pick up the book for $15.22 a 45% savings from the regular price of $27.00. If you’re interested in meeting this local celebrity, she’ll be doing a question and answer session at Books & Book in the Gables on October 7, 2012 at 5pm. There will be bourbon (Hedy’s drank of choice) laced cocktails and paninis will be served (who doesn’t like free booze and food?) As an added bonus, if you buy a copy of the book while at the Q&A session you’ll be given a complimentary bag-o-treats.

Not the baking type? Is the fire department on standy by whenever you attempt to cook? If that’s the case, just go to Michael’s Genuine and try Hedy’s creations for yourself. They are well worth the calories!
